B). ROYAL NAVY SUBMARINE MUSEUM, GOSPORT.

Departure: 08-00 am from Watford Central Library and returns at about 18-00 pm.

The core of the Royal Navy Submarine Museum collection is its 4 submarines: HMS Alliance – a World War 2 vintage vessel, launched in 1945; Holland 1 – the RN’s first submarine; X24 a midget submarine and a German Navy midget submarine Biber. Walk through HMS Alliance, and peer through the working periscope at Portsmouth Harbour. The collection also has much more of interest to fill your visit.

The site and exhibits have reasonably good access for those of limited mobility, but if in doubt, ask Colin Barry.

SUNDAY 5th JUNE 2016.

A). DIDCOT RAILWAY CENTRE – Home of the Great Western Society.

B). TRANSPORT RALLY WITH VINTAGE BUS RIDES TO NEARBY DIDCOT FOOTBALL GROUND.

Lots of Old Buses and other examples of vintage transport.

From Brunel’s Broad Gauge to the modern trains running past the Centre, this is home to over 180 years of railway and social history. It is expected that 2 steam engines will be used, hauling visitor trains.

Please note: Entrance to the site involves access via 18 steps and a subway. Although wheelchairs are the available in the site. The Transport Rally is being held for the second year running and was highly successful last year.
We expect to see a wide collection of old buses and other vintage vehicles. This year the event is
being held at the nearby Didcot Football Ground, which can be accessed by, the included, vintage
bus rides from outside the Didcot Parkway Station.

FRIDAY 8th JULY 2016.

THE ROYAL INTERNATIONAL AIR TATTOO – RAF FAIRFORD.

Departure: 08-00 am from Watford Central Library and returns at about 18:30/19-00 pm Coach fare: £20:00 Adult/Seniors: £24.

This is described as the World’s Greatest Air show. For those interested in Military aircraft this is a must. In 2015 there was 2 miles of attractions, 232 aircraft from 22 countries and an 8 hour flying display. On Friday it is cheaper and the above numbers are reduced to more manageable proportions. But as long as the weather is not too bad, there is more than enough for a spectacular
day. The flying display runs from 11 am to 3 pm. Outside these times, visitors can enter the Pit Area
to view those aircraft, which are partaking in the flying display and perhaps meet their crews and
engineers. With thanks and acknowledgements to the various venues for some of the text. We need a minimum of 20 people per trip, in order not to make a large financial loss. Bookings can be
made up to the dates shown below. They will be assessed THREE WEEKS before the date of the visit and the decision made on whether to go ahead or to cancel. At this time: - If you have booked for a Visit and it has had to be cancelled through lack of support, YOU WILL BE INFORMED and your money refunded. (see Air Tattoo note) If you have booked for a Visit and it is to go ahead YOU WILL ALSO BE INFORMED, so that you are in no doubt that the trip is still on. You may cancel a Visit up to THREE WEEKS before the date of the trip and your money will be refunded except for Air Tattoo.

Please contact Colin Barry on 01923 677331 or Bruce Clark on 01442 264869 if you need to cancel.

There can be no refunds for Members cancelling after these dates.

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is undoubtedly one of the ‘jewels’ of this country; history in abundance, industrial prowess, spectacle and poignancy. Six great experiences combine to make this one of your most memorable days: The new Mary Rose Museum tell the powerful and tragic story of Henry VIII’s flagship – sunk in the Solent after firing a single salvo, taking a whole world with it for about 500 years. The preserving sprays have been switched of for the first time and you can see into the “hotbox”. HMS Victory – Lord Nelson’s Flagship looked almost as it did at the ‘Battle of Trafalgar’. The National Museum of the Royal Navy revealing the undiscovered stories of the men, women and ships that impacted on all our lives over the last 100 years. Also the interactive modern navy in the ‘Action Stations’ exhibit. HMS Warrior is the last survivor of Queen Victoria’s ‘Black Fleet’ of 1860; the first iron hulled warship, powered by sail and steam. A harbour cruise is included around the naval dockyards to view the naval ships that may be in Portsmouth.
