Our speakers are experienced in their fields giving PowerPoint and well illustrated presentations.
Frank will entertain us again with a selection of transport related films from his vast collection.
THE GRAHAME NEALE MEMORIAL LECTURE
"The Industrial Revolution-Why Here and Why Then?"
The late 18th and early 19th century changed Britain profoundly. The 1851 Great Exhibition celebrated Britain’s world dominance that the Revolution had created but why did this small island see such dramatic change and what brought it about?
(The meeting will be preceded by the AGM at 7.30pm)
STOP PRESS: This presentation postponed: see scrolling banner...
"IK Brunel and the GWR"
All of Brunel’s extraordinary expertise, skill and energy were fully employed in planning, designing and overcoming the many civil engineering challenges of this outstanding achievement.
"An Introduction to Mechanical Music"
Childhood encounters with a Polyphon musical box, a neighbour’s Pianola and later a fairground organ, sealed Michael’s lifetime interest. He will use examples from his own collection which covers the whole history of this entertaining subject and of course will include some seasonal tunes.
Meeting followed by traditional Christmas nibbles and jollification.
"Shipping – East of Suez (An Engineer’s life in the Merchant Navy)"
"Underfall Yard Bristol"
A fascinating talk and virtual tour of Underfall Yard in the heart of Bristol’s Floating Harbour. Andrew includes a virtual visit to the working Victorian workshop and the hydraulic system of pumps which still keep the harbour free of silt.
"Waves Wheels and Sparks – sailing into the electrical age"
This is the story of Radio, Radar, GPS and other devices that we have invented and depended upon for communication and navigation. It includes how an ancient child’s toy has steered ships, missiles, submarines and spacecraft. Also enabled us to drive vehicles on the moon without satnav or compass.
An evening of short illustrated talks from our members with all their varied interests.
